Winter can be tough man, especially on your mental health. The cold. The dark nights. And that dreaded January feeling. If you ever feel that way I want to help you, I’m no expert but here’s a few helpful tips for anyone who struggles to look after their mental health over winter and what has helped me in the past.
- Be unapologetic about needing your own space
- Know that there are so many expectations and that it’s okay not to meet them all
- Take your time and do things at your own pace
- Find things that calm you such as taking baths, colouring and meditation so that you can apply them whenever needed
- If possible explain your needs to your family so that there can be a more understanding space to be a part of.
- Don’t feel like you have to spend time with toxic people just because your family, you don’t have to be around people who damage you
- Stay as sociable as your mental health will let you because being alone can make you feel more excluded.
- Be as active as you can be because that will help you produce endorphins and feel like you’ve achieved something
- If plausible book/arrange things in the upcoming months so you have things to work towards and look forward to. For example visiting family, going to events or exploring a place you’ve never been before
